Marie Wiro at her home in 1974. Marie lived here for 60 years without running water or electricity. Marie's husband, Bill Wiro, was born and died in the same room in this house. Location near 2238 11th street.

 


This shanty was built for Charles Lickert in 1885 and is the only known colony shanty remaining in Olivenhain. It was used as a residence for about 24 years and the remainder years as a storage shed. This shanty was originally constructed in block 50 (located on west side of Rancho Santa Fe road and somewhere between El Camino Del Norte and 9th street). It was moved to the Wiro residence (located near 2238 11th street) sometime before 1916. In 1979 it was moved to the meeting hall property where it remains today. Photo taken in 1974.

If ever Olivenhain had a cattleman, it was Herman Wiegand. He often hearded hundreds of cattle down Rancho Santa Fe road to pasture in back country. This 1974 photo shows Herman at 84 years of age, he lived to be 103.

Garage at the Teten Ranch

 


This Colony shanty originally belonged to Fred Edselstorfer and was located on the north east corner of Rancho Santa Fe road and Encinitas blvd. The Teten's moved the building to their ranch near the west end of 5th street. Following Lora Tetens death, the builting was moved to the Encinitas heritage musium and used as a display.

 


After John and Lora married, Anna Teten moved into this house. Teten ranch was located near present day Jennifer Ln.

 


This was the original 1885 post office for Olivenhain. Was originally located several hundred yards south of this location. Photo taken in possibly the late 1950's. Photo taken from Rancho Santa Fe road looking east. buildling is close to present day Jennifer lane.

This is the first photo I ever took in my life. It's Christmas morning and I got a Kodak Brownie camera. Were at the Wiro farm. From left is Herman Bumann, George Bumann (my father), William Wiro, Lorraine Wiro, Marie wiro, and Bill Wiro. This may have been the last photo taken of Bill, who passed away ten days later. December 25, 1955.

White gate parallels Lone jack road with Double LL Ranch road behind gate. Tall sign on the bottom right is on the northeast corner of Lone Jack road and Dove Hollow road. The sign read "The Lone Jack Ranch" and is where Lone Jack road got its name. This sign was removed in 1915.

Encinitas Copper Mine, is Located in Copper creek canyon, Carlsbad California. Two horizontal tunnels penetrated east canyon wall. They terminated at a shaft that dropped vertically about 125 feet. These tunnels were closed in the 1970's. This photo was taken by Adeline Bruning May 29, 1965.
